Kithul treacle is made from the sap of the Kithul palm (Caryota urens) which is locally grown in Sri Lanka. The MD Kithul treacle is made by boiling down the pure sap into a dark brown sweet syrup with a very thick consistency. Locals love to eat Kithul treacle with buffalo curd while it is also used as a sweetener for various food and sweet dishes as well as drinks especially herbal concoctions.
Kithul treacle has reducing sugars which enables the syrup to pass through one body without being stored inside our system. Kithul has a low calorie content when compared with cane sugar as well as a high nutrient content. Kithul treacle is also a common ingredient in Ayurvedic medicine while you can even use it as an alternative sweetener.
