Plants and Seeds

The Areca nut plant (Areca catechu) is a tall, slender palm tree widely cultivated in tropical regions like Sri Lanka. It thrives in warm, humid climates with well-drained soil and begins bearing fruit within 5–7 years. The tree produces clusters of orange or reddish nuts, commonly chewed with betel leaves and used in traditional medicine. Beyond its cultural significance, the plant’s leaves and husks are repurposed for biodegradable products, contributing to sustainability. With a lifespan of over 50 years, the Areca nut plant remains an essential part of agriculture, commerce, and tradition in many South Asian communities.
