Sinhala and Tamil New Year, known as Aluth Avurudu in Sinhala and Puthandu in Tamil, is one of the most significant cultural celebrations in Sri Lanka. It marks the end of the old year and the beginning of a new one, based on the movement of the sun from the Meena Rashiya (Pisces) to the Mesha Rashiya (Aries). Unlike the Western New Year, the Sinhala and Tamil New Year follows a unique set of Nakath (auspicious timings) that dictate various rituals and customs.

Importance of Nakath

Nakath refers to the predetermined auspicious times set by astrologers for different Avurudu activities. These specific times are followed with great devotion to ensure prosperity, health, and happiness for the coming year. Every year, the Nakath times slightly vary based on astrological calculations.

පරණ අවුරුද්ද සඳහා ස්නානය

• අප්‍රේල් මස 13 වැනි ඉරිදා දින දිවුල්පත් යුෂ මිශ්‍ර නානු ගා ස්නානය කොට ඉෂ්ට දේවතා අනුස්මරණයෙහි යෙදී වාසය මැනවි.

• අප්‍රේල් මස 14 වැනි සඳුදා දින පූර්වභාග 03.21 ට සිංහල අලුත් අවුරුද්ද උදාවෙයි.

පුණ්‍ය කාලය

• අප්‍රේල් මස 13 වැනි ඉරිදා අපරභාග 08.57 සිට පසුදින එනම් 14 වැනි සඳුදා පූර්වභාග 09.45 දක්වා පුණ්‍ය කාලය බැවින් අපේල් මස් 13 ඉරිදා අපරභාග 08.57 ට පළමුව ආහාර පාන ගෙන සියලු වැඩ අත්හැර ආගමික වතාවත්වල යෙදීම ද, පුණ්‍ය කාලයේ අපරභාග කොටස එනම් අප්‍රේල් මස 14 වැනි සඳුදා පූර්වභාග 03.21 සිට 14 වැනි සඳුදා පූර්වභාග 09.45 දක්වා පහත දැක්වෙන අයුරින් ආහාර පිසීම,වැඩ ඇල්ලීම,ගනුදෙනු කිරීම හා ආහාර අනුභවය ආදී නැකත් චාරිත්‍ර විධි ඉටු කිරීම මැනවි.

• අප්‍රේල් මස 16 වැනි බදාදා පූර්වභාග 09.04 ට පච්ච හෙවත් කොල පැහැති වස්ත්‍රාභරණයෙන් සැරසී උතුරු දිශාව බලා හිසට කොහොඹ පත් ද පයට කොළොන් පත් ද තබා කොහොඹ පත් යුෂ මිශ්‍ර නානු හා තෙල් ගා ස්නානය කිරීම මැනවි.

රැකීරක්ෂා සඳහා පිටත්ව යෑම

• අප්‍රේල් මස 17 වැනි බ්‍රහස්පතින්දා පූර්වභාග 09.03 ට රන්වන් පැහැති වස්ත්‍රාභරණයෙන් සැරසී කිරිබතක් හා එළකිරි මිශ්‍ර කැවිලි වර්ගයක් අනුභව කර උතුරු දිශාව බලා පිටත්ව යෑම මැනවි.

Observing the New Moon

Date: Sunday, March 30 (for the Lunar New Year) and Thursday, May 1 (for the Solar New Year).

Significance: The new moon is observed as an important transition in the Sinhala New Year calendar.

Ritual Bath for the Old Year

Date: Sunday, April 13

Significance: Before the old year ends, people take a herbal bath using juice extracted from Divul (wood apple) leaves. After bathing, they engage in religious observances and prayers to seek blessings for the coming year.

Dawn of the New Year

Date & Time: Monday, April 14 at 3:21 AM

Significance: This marks the official transition from the old year to the new. People light lamps and begin the New Year rituals.

Punya Kalaya (Neutral Period)

Date & Time: From Sunday, April 13 at 8:57 PM to Monday, April 14 at 9:45 AM

Significance: During this period, all work is paused, and people engage in religious activities such as temple visits and prayers. The first part of the Punya Kalaya (from April 13, 8:57 PM) is dedicated to religious observances, while the latter part (April 14, from 3:21 AM to 9:45 AM) is when people engage in auspicious activities such as cooking, working, transactions, and having their first meal.

Preparation of the First Meal

Date & Time: Monday, April 14 at 4:04 AM

Significance: Wearing copper-colored attire and facing the south, people light the hearth, prepare kiribath (milk rice), sweetmeats, and other traditional food, and boil fresh milk to symbolize prosperity.

Starting Work, Transactions, and First Meal

Date & Time: Monday, April 14 at 6:44 AM

Significance: Wearing white and pearl-colored clothing while facing south, people resume work, engage in financial transactions, and share the first meal of the year, ensuring prosperity and good fortune.

Anointing of Oil

Date & Time: Wednesday, April 16 at 9:04 AM

Significance: Dressed in green-colored attire, people face north and anoint their heads with herbal oil infused with kohomba (neem) leaves while placing kolon leaves under their feet. This ritual is believed to bring health and protection for the coming year.

Stepping Out for Protection and Prosperity

Date & Time: Thursday, April 17 at 9:03 AM

Significance: Dressed in gold-colored clothing, people eat kiribath and traditional sweets before stepping outside, facing north. This ritual symbolizes embarking on a prosperous new journey for the year ahead.
